Andy French

Guitar, vocals and composition

Andy French The Hollowkind’s front-man Andy French has been a musician for over 30 years. He started playing classical guitar in his teens tutored by the renowned Spanish/Classical guitarist Mike Raven but he soon developed an enduring love of the electric guitar. Inspired by the likes of Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Jimi Page (Led Zeppelin), Andy worked for 2 years washing dishes in a pub to buy his first electric guitar, a Gibson Les Paul Custom which he plays to this day.

Being a 3-piece, The Hollokind’s sound is naturally coloured by Andy’s guitar tones. One of the changes from his solo work has been a heavy reliance on 7-string guitar. At present Andy favours two such instruments: an Ibanez Universe in standard tuning (B to E) and a LTD SC607-B which is dropped a full tone (A to D).

“I now find it strange to play 6-string guitars.” says Andy. “They feel like banjos. The Universe is a fantastic guitar and was a natural move for me having played a JEM 777FP for so long. But I have to say the SC607-B has been a revelation. The active EMG pickups really lift the tone.”

For the backline Andy has moved away from the traditional amp and pedal board setup. “I’ve been using a Line 6 POD XT Pro for a few years now and I love it to bits. I used to be a Marshall guy all the way but I got fed up with the lack of variation in tone. The POD just makes all those problems go away.”

For Andy’s live setup the POD XT Pro is routed straight through the PA. “For a contemporary sound you really have to route everything through a decent PA and mixer. The POD just makes this a doddle.”

Andy’s compositional style has changed from his solo work with less reliance on lead guitar and much more on heavy riffing. “I’m really enjoying getting back to basics” says Andy.

The Hollowkind is a collaboration of musicians previously associated with the 1980s heavy metal band Golgotha. “Yeah, I don’t really know how that happened. Somehow Jonah, Dave and I hooked up after years of not seeing much of each other at all but it wasn’t long before we were playing together.”

Andy believes the years of experience are really paying off. “It’s been a lot of fun. We don’t feel like we’ve got anything to prove and the years of experience each of us has under our belts has made the process a joy.”
